The total volume of gold ever mined is estimated at about 165,000 tons. Around 65% of that has been mined since 1950. At the end of 2005, the world’s gold producers estimated that there were only about 22,000 tons of gold remaining in their reserves. This would allow for 14 years of mining, though there is likely to be more as new reserves are discovered. The largest gold nugget ever found measured in at 10 inches by 25 inches! The “Welcome Stranger” nugget, as it was called, produced 154 pounds of pure gold and was found only 2 inches below the ground!
